Valentin Bianchi Malbec 2013

A few years ago there was fear in the wine world that Argentine Malbec was going down the same over-production under-performing path that Australian Shiraz blazed in the early 2000's. The popularity level of the Malbec grape was increasing so fast it was bound to lose its wheels. Unfortunately, many Malbecs succumbed to this fate, making rather weedy Malbecs from young vines being pushed into over-production. A few producers avoided this peril by focusing on quality rather than quantity (what a concept!) and one that did this better than most was Valentin Bianchi.

The color of this wine is perfect deep black-purple, the kind of color that induces a Pavlovian response in wine drinkers like I'm experiencing right now (pardon me while I wipe my chin). The aromas are equally rich and textured, with loads of plummy goodness, dark chocolate hints, a touch of graphite, and oodles of black raspberry. A long graceful finish with fine tannins completes the wine. This is seriously yummy Malbec. Red meat is the default for the wines of Argentina (and one of the most boring and predictable -- but good -- wine and food pairings out there). For a daring evening try this with Moroccan spiced lamb with a side of curried rice. I think it would be fantastic.
