Blanchet Pouilly-Fume Calcite 2012

Francis Blanchet is one of those gems in our portfolio that we love so much to represent (and direct import ... when we purchase this wine we buy it directly from the Blanchet family rather that through an importer middleman ... thus, bigger bang for the buck). Blanchet owns a tiny piece of property in Pouilly Fume, and if he made only one wine it would be stunning and super limited and extremely hard to find. But rather than make just one, he makes three from the property. Why? Because they are three different terroirs that express themselves in different ways. Though all three are Sauvignon Blanc, they show, like siblings, similarities but also distinct differences. And all three are, obviously, super limited in production. This dude doesn't make much wine.

The 2012 Pouilly Fume Calcite is a racy little number, with aromas of bright white fruits and flowers bounding out of the glass. The minerally aspect of the wine (hence the 'calcite' name) is also apparent in the aroma. Imagine a limestone cliff after a rainstorm. Shy in its youth, it's obvious this wine is going to grow a bit in the next year or two, loosening up its tight hold on the aromatics. The flavor profile is dynamic, with the same energy as the first sip of a margarita after a five hour trek through a jungle .. you mouth simply wants. The finish comes to a point a few seconds after swallowing and just like Kevin Spacey in the final scene of The Usual Suspects just like that .... poof! ... it's gone. Awesome stuff. -- Tasting note by Jason Kallsen November 2013
