Breca Garnacha 2016

Breca 2011 Old Vines Garnacha, Calatayud | 14.5% | 100% Garnacha | Hand harvested atop the soaring slate and gravel slopes of Calatayud from Garnacha vines first planted in the late 1800s with select replanting between 1925 and 1945, this qualifies as Old Vine to be sure. This is Garnacha at its bigger and plumper end of the spectrum with black plums, blackberries, blueberries in cream, toasted anise, and that sweet scent of burly pipe tobacco. Tannins are fine and tightly knit with a subtle strength like a slender ski sweater that could stand up on its own for its structure. Despite all the guts and glory to this there is a quenching relief at the finish that makes all the broody bits say “Uncle!” leaving all parting as friends. What a sleeper!

Expert Review

91 Tanzer
(sourced from vines that were reportedly planted between 1925 and 1945; aged for 21 months in large French oak barrels): Glass-staining ruby. Intense scents of blackberry, cherry-cola and candied violet, with strong mineral and star anise accents. Shows energetic, focused flavors of dark berries and candied flowers, with a late kick of peppery spices. Picks up sweetness with air, finishing impressively long, with lingering notes of vanilla and candied flowers.

90 Points - the Wine Spectator Advance, October 2014
"This dense red shows a savory character, with tar, ink and licorice notes framing the core of plum and meat flavors. Features firm, well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity. Distinctive. Drink now through 2018."
