Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja 2004

Muga is one of the last and greatest producers of the traditional style of Rioja, prizing mature flavors of leather, tea, tobacco, clove, black pepper, chestnut, incense, and wild herbs over the “modern” rendition which focuses on blackberry fruit and new wood. Located in the town of Haro in the heart of the Rioja Alta, Bodegas Muga has been crafting wines in the old style for two centuries. The Gran Reserva is 80 % Tempranillo, with Garnacha, Mazuedo, and Graciano – crushed into huge upright oak tanks where it ferments and rests on the lees for a year, then moved into oak casks for three years, and then matures for 3+ years in the bottle. The result of all of this time in wood and bottle is a wine of caressing texture, profound layers of spice and fruit, and a finish that goes on for longer than seems possible.
