Muga Reserva Seleccion Especial 2014

Muga 2009 Selección Especial Reserva Rioja DOC | 14% | 70 % Tempranillo, 20 % Garnacha, 7 % Mazuelo and 3% Graciano planted to tertiary clay-calcareous soils | Its dark complexion makes for quite a carte visite… heaven help us! Such a deep color for a Reserva Rioja going on five years –especially one which has rested 28 months in barrels from Muga’s very own cooperage. The nose and palate resonate with such fragrant flavors as rich cherries and pomegranate, something akin to a freshly tooled leathern luxury item, and then a whole crescendo of aromatics hinting at thyme and turmeric, cinnamon and cloves that are impressive without brawn despite a resounding texture.

Balanced and beautiful, this brings me back our introduction at a dinner going on ten years ago in the days leading up to my dearest college friends marriage to his beautiful and brilliant Spanish bride –a dinner at Mesón Casas Colgadas –a restaurant patronized by princes whose striking edifice clings to the cliffs overhanging the Huécar riverbed in Cuenca Spain. The wine flowed and I enjoyed the largest plate of foie gras I’ve ever seen before or since. The Selección Especial would perhaps be more at home fine a fine cut of beef or game on the hoof –but is certainly not for a vegan dish as this wine is still fined in the age old tradition of using egg whites. The Selección Especial is as impressive now as it was then –a wine to redefine the pleasure of Spain and stay with you forever.
