Rio Madre Rioja Tempranillo 2013

American wine drinkers are fast discovering that Rioja is one of the top regions to get bang for the buck. The area has a long history of storied quality, and in the last ten years Rioja has truly dialed in their quality standards. But here is something few know: it’s not just the Tempranillo grape that goes into Rioja. In fact, a number of grapes are allowed to be in a Rioja including up to 100% of the wine. This particular one is made from Graciano, an old varietal that some think may be related to Monsastrell (otherwise known as Mourvedre).

Like the previous vintage, this is ink black in color, a stunning opaque pour from such an affordable wine. Aromas of spiced cherry juice, pepper, worn leather, and rusty iron. An amazing aroma package, vaguely hinting toward the wines of far southern France in the Languedoc-Rouission area. The mouthfeel is soft and expansive and doesn’t track with the aromatics … this is a wonderfully unpredictable wine that would be right at home with grilled spicy foods of all sizes and shapes. Dates stuffed with chorizo and a white cheese? Paprika rubbed pork tenderloin? A rack of baby back ribs with the perfect dry rub? All ideal.

This is exceptional wine through and through, and worth a look if you’re into wines that have distinctive personalities.
