Growers the world over like to claim their Syrah is of the Rhone style, which certainly cannot be said of the lusciously ripened antipodean offerings. Venturing to South Africa, however, one finds this climate shares a bit with the Rhone and their Syrah resembles one another in their high toned aromatics, a broad spectrum of pepper and plum fruit flavours and an affinity to food. The most salient difference is that South African Syrah is more accessible from the very start, seldom shies away from expressing the variety’s meaty personality and seems to lend itself naturally to wines with velvety textures.
