Boutisse Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016

All of us come to tasting a wine with our own preferences and history shaping our reactions. No wine tasting exists in a vacuum. Thus, it’s good for you to know that I’m not a huge fan of Bordeaux in general, and even less of a fan of the Right Bank of Bordeaux, the Merlot based wines of Pomerol and Saint Emilion.

I love this wine. Very complete and rich black-red fruits abound in the nose, with just a wee hint of heat from the alcohol (14.5%) … enough to add a touch of interest without distraction. The aromas are plush and soft, as they should be, and dark like the color in the glass. In the mouth the velvet happiness continues. This is softer edged and immensely happy wine that is being consumed by me right now in late July but I immediately dream of the upcoming first nights of winter, when the fresh snow blows horizontal and entering a building is followed by a shiver of dual purpose: to shake off the snow, and start the body warming up. This is the wine for times like that. Can’t wait to try it with slow braised beef of any sort.

Food Pairings

Red meats, game, lamb, cheeses -all the classic solutions when you're fortunate enough to have such a Grand Cru right bank Bordeaux in hand.
