As Pinot Noir really develops under long, cool growing conditions, California has a lot to offer –especially from parts of Sonoma, the Central Coast, Santa Barbara and San Benito. Such pockets of terroir yield Pinot Noirs of exemplary varietal character while conveying the given terroir. These transmute simply Pinot Noir by numbers. Although Burgundy has a couple millennia on us, we are apt pupils and California Pinot Noir at once combines the ripe complexity of the West Coast, while crafting great Pinot Noir of primary red fruits such as cherries, strawberries, raspberries –even bright plums. With time these can spread out from this profile to show more of the land from whence they came –whether supple from fog blanketed Carneros or mineral from the precious lime stone of Mt Harlan. To taste California Pinot Noir is to travel to the very AVAs they come from.
