Casanova di Neri Rosso / IRROSSO 2010

The name sounds confusing, but don't let that stop you in your tracks. Here's the deal: Casanova di Neri is number one in the privileged region of Brunello di Montalcino. The younger vines and barrels that don't make the cut for the expensive Brunello are often designated Rosso di Montalcino, but the Neri family prefers to call their Rosso di Montalcino under the name "Rosso di Casanova di Neri." Additionally, it's labeled as from the DOC "Sant' Antimo" which is actually a new sub-DOC of the Brunello region. ***sigh*** Okay, so let's get to the important stuff: how's the wine? Black-red in the glass with a medium to full bodied color, rather intense. Aromas are modern-ish, with jammy essence of blackberries and raspberries but with a lovely floral note sprinkling across the palate. De-lish-ous. The mouthfeel is pronounced, with a touch of heat but the heat is an asset this flavor, not a detriment. So much has been debated lately regarding alcohol content, but in the end if a wine is balanced, it's balanced. Period. Yum.
