Saumur Champigny Reserve de Vignerons 2009

Well well…at last! The Loire Valley enjoys a balmy vintage and Cabernet Franc then reminds us it is not always lean and leafy. Instead 2009 brought plenty of sun and warmth to tease out all the floral charms and juicy fruit one yearns for from Saumur-Champigny. Even for all its ripened cheer, the vintage has proven to preserve the mineral backbone without upstaging the plumy fruit or hampering the gentle spice that lifts off the glass like small scented roses and exotic violets. I find this just the sort of juicy red for summer picnics, autumnal roasts, winter feasts and spring bruncheons. That’s right: this is so compatible with food that it can dance like Fred Astaire any time, any way, and with any partnering food WITHOUT upstaging it. It even recently did a nimble little ditty with oysters! Ever meet a red that could accompany oysters?!

Food Pairings

This wine's lively acidity pairs well with rillets, pate, cold cuts, cold chicken, salmon especially smoked or grilled, and at an oyster feed it recently topped all reds as the best red wine for oysters. Twas a bold man that first paired red with
