Chiarli Lambrusco Vecchia Modena 2013

Cleto Chiarli e Figli 2013 Premium Vecchia Modena Lambrusco di Sorbara Secco DOC, Emilia Romagna | 11% | 100% Lambrusco di Sorbara from the estate’s finest plots chosen for fragrance and concentration, this gently effervescent rosé like sparkling red is a Lambrusco of another cloth altogether: dry and beguiling –a culmination of over 150 years’ experience as Lambrusco’s oldest wine estate. Cleto Chiarli has all the kinks worked out with no need to imitate and instead proves steadfast in honoring the old ways before Lambrusco’s worldwide vogue set the market straying toward the sweeter palates wagging the dog.

Sweet scents of alpen strawberries are checked by a woodsy edge akin to the inimitable aroma of the clippings from pruning apple trees –that sweet penetrating scent of fruit wood whose sap even burns fragrantly but with a green bark to its fruity bite. The palate is supple and soft in texture but invigorated by a acidulous tart cherry lift. Over the years this dry, crisp, sapid Lambrusco has quietly but all the more effectively usurped the place of beer for the foods I might otherwise at first think to pair with the grain and hops: the hot coconut cream sweetness of Thai foods, the layered warmth of Indian cuisine, the savory depth of Moroccan tagines –any fried foods. A charming, gently sparkling wine to leave one licking one’s lips.
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, July 5, 2014 (Root)

“Deep rosé colour, with clear fragrances of strawberry and brushwood. Its taste is fresh, pervasive, mineral, and at the same time velvety and surprisingly pleasant. Dynamic.”
