Drouhin Meursault Blanc 2009

Organic | A few kilometers south of Beaune, in the celebrated terroir of Côte des Blancs (Slope of the Whites), we find Meursault –certainly one of the oldest villages in Burgundy. The camp of Mont Milan, above the present village, was erected and settled in Neolithic times (2,500 BC), before being occupied by the Gauls (500BC) and then the Romans. It was finally abandoned for the present location of the village built during the Gallo-Roman period, at which time the name Muris Saltus (Meursault) was given to it. In Meursault different types of soil are found: deep and colorful around the village, clearer and lighter at mid-slope and nearly white and very rocky in the upper reaches of the appellation. Together they yield the firm yet voluptuous Chardonnay we love from this appellation of Burgundy and 12 months in oak (25% new) this comes into its own.

On the nose this is perhaps the most like M.F.K. Fisher’s now famous tangerine that I’ve ever enjoyed. Read that passage in “Serve it forth” and you’ll always yearn to know what she’s on about and certainly keep your senses attuned for your very own “secret eatings.” Mine might be a secret drinking –a Meursault I keep to myself for myself. On the nose you can just about inhale the warm waxy rinds, the cool tangerine flesh, and lifted floral notes. The palate is just what I love on Meursault; not heavy set but rather curvaceous in all the right spots. Verve, texture and an expansive and enticing finish make for a marvelous Meursault to keep in the cellar for impromptu glasses of a truly hedonistic white Burgundy. Meursault can be served alone as an aperitif with smoked salmon. At dinner, Meursault is recommended with delicate fish dishes, lobster, foie gras or even poultry, as well as fresh goat cheese.
