Drouhin Cote de Nuits Villages Rouge 2011

Joseph Drouhin 2011 Côte de Nuits-Villages, Bourgogne | 13% | Looking out from an office window onto an unrelenting succession of big, thick, wet snowflakes on their way to build up to a foot of snow, I cannot help but admire the pensive side of Pinot Noir grown in the sites within the Côte de Nuits –an ancient vineland named for the capitol of its Côte just as the Côte de Beaune is named for its storied capitol which incidentally is where the Dukes of Burgundy kept their wine in the Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne -the very stone caverns the Drouhins now call home at the very heart of Burgundy farther south than this wine’s provenance.

This is a taste of northern Burgundy with all the richer more masculine character of the Côte de Nuits. A blend of Pinot Noir planted to the clay and limestone parcels of Corgoloin, Comblanchien, Premeaux, Brochon, and Couchey all villages earning the honor of campaigning under the collective banner Côte de Nuits-Villages. While just about all Burgundy is on a more elegant spectrum of more delicate subtlety, this certainly ventures toward the richer dark woodsy notes with a bit of that chypre come sandalwood but stays elegant with a faint fragrance of cool ferns of the understory and the duff of the undergrowth –that sous bois that surfaces when scuffed as we walk in the woods –an engaging Pinot Noir of place showing its red fruit profile handsomely.

"A delicious red Burgundy, with harmonious flavours. Bright ruby colour. On the nose, intense aromas of wild cherry, liquorice and mild spices, evolving towards notes of undergrowth and mushroom. On the palate, excellent balance between tannin, acidity and "gras" (velvety texture). The aftertaste is reminiscent of little red berries".

Excellent with light meats, roast chicken, and mild cheeses.
