Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 2017
Joseph Drouhin 2009 Beaune Clos des Mouches Premier Cru Blanc | 13.5% | Beaune is an idyllic land for Chardonnay for its limestone hills inspire the best from the variety. Couple that with such a gifted east-southeasterly slope and one has liquid gold. Historically the sunny hillside of Clos des Mouches was named for the honeybees, mouches à miel that were kept there. Bees are heliotropes and love a good ray of sunshine and so does Chardonnay –especially in these more northern climes. The Drouhin parcel, ideally positioned halfway up the slope, is the largest of those with holdings in Clos des Mouches at 35 acres.
Painstakingly farmed biodynamically since the early 1990s, the densely planted vines average 45 years old and are harvested at 20% the appellation yield limits to ensure the greatest expression of terroir. This is a layered white Burgundy of great dry extract whose floral, lemon peel, and white peach heights are grounded by honey poached apples with a mineral soupless that has a strength but a nimble grace.
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, February 21, 2014 (Flower)
"An outstanding wine. Pale yellow colour. Complex floral nose of white lilac and white rose. Once open, fruity aromas come to the fore, evolving towards grilled hazelnut and almond. When the wine is more mature, the nose is surprisingly strong and fifteen minutes of aeration produce wonderful notes of white truffle, citron (cedrat), honey and nutmeg, elegantly meshed together. Very lively on the palate. Its rich texture is in evidence, but also its structure and minerality. It is round, but never heavy. Harmonious fullness in the aftertaste. This wine allies remarkably the complexity and elegance of a Bâtard-Montrachet with the power of a Corton-Charlemagne"
Tasting note by Véronique Drouhin
92 Points - "The last vestiges of reduction detract only mildly from the otherwise nuanced and well-layered aromas of peach, citrus and white flowers. The rich flavors retain a fine sense of definition as well as a subtle minerality on the suave, silky and explosively long finish. This is a wine of harmony and grace that should age well."
