Encosta da Estrela Dao White 2013

Encosta de Estrela Dão 2013
The white wines of Portugal have traditionally been a roll of the dice. Until very recently the wines were prone to randomness in terms of stability, but since the mid 2000’s the wines have become increasingly more predictable and delicious. Traditional varieties are often used, and this particular wine includes Bical, Malvasia Fina, and Cerceal Branco. As in many cases with wines like this, just don’t worry about what grapes are in it. Drink and enjoy.

This wines hits a super neat point in the wine world: a fuller bodied white wine that has a good solid bead of acidity at the same time. One of the other varieties that achieves this rare act is garganega, used to make fine Soave Classico in northeastern Italy. Aromas of lilac blossom, lemon curd, rosin bag, and pineapple juice play off a medium bodied mouthfeel with hints of apple cider. Intriguing, yes? A fine wine to accompany a wide range of foods but the one that pops to mind immediately are Portuguese sardines grilled simply over charcoal with a crust of sea salt and pepper.
