La Valentina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2010

As fragrant a Montepulciano as they come with heaps of spices, cracked pepper, licorice and a full breadth of smoky red plums. There is a concentration and focus to this Montepulicano d’Abruzzo which might be from the fact La Valentina has one of the most attentive staff a winery could hope to have. Coming from vines ranging from 10 to 40 years old, the fruit ripens farther and given their commitment to sustainability and integrated pest management, their terroir remains true and their wines unencumbered by the scars of conventional viticulture. Rich, high toned, and fragrant this is exemplary Montepulciano d’Abruzzo for the next generation of more mindful growers.
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, February 2013

“At first sight the deep, intense ruby red colour of the wine is striking, with small violet arches. The bouquet suggests red fruit, rose petals and hints of wet spices. It is soft and warm to the palate with notes of red prune, cherry and blueberry which are harmoniously intertwined around a lively tannic theme. Being fruit of an exceptional harvest, gives it a full, enveloping body, which finishes with liquorice and cloves. The fine performance is completed with an after-taste of black pepper and cranberry. This wine may be drunk immediately or laid down for 5 years. It is ideal to accompany pasta timbale, lamb stew, char-grilled cod and seasoned, pecorino cheese. Drink immediately or keep for 5 years too.”
