Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2016
Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2011 | A personal favorite, and I've been looking forward to trying this for a while. The region of Chianti Rufina is the highest elevation sub-region of Chianti, in the northeastern corner of the region, and produces elegant yet strong and long-lived wines. The oldest Selvapiana I've had was 1955 and it was still kicking.
This one is earthier than years past, a sort of Cotes du Rhone meets Sangiovese aroma. The aromas of dried herbs and worn leather are completely enveloped in warm raspberry. Just outstanding smells coming from this, with a touch of spiked cherry late in the pass. The mouthfeel is equally velvety (say that ten times fast, especially after a bottle of this!) and makes me think that this might very well be the most elegant Chianti I've ever had. To enjoy this with carefully grilled lean meat would be a treat, especially with a saute of wild mushrooms. - Tasting note by Jason Kallsen, November 2013
Food Pairings
Seriously anything tomatoey sings with Sangiovese, pizza and pasta to be sure. Sausages, chicken, gazpacho. Bread salad.
