Enrique Foster IQUE Malbec 2008

Enrique Foster, IQUE Malbec, Lujan de Cuyo, Argentina 2008
This is Euro-Malbec – and that’s why I love it. It’s not missing any of the dark black cherry fruit you expect from Argentinian Malbec, but it adds more acidity and provides an elegant structure. The finish makes me think of roasted purple peppers, making the creative juices flow with food pairing ideas. I’ll get back to you on that….

2008 is a good vintage in Argentina and this is a wine I've usually liked. I do like this one as well but it takes a little work. The wine is produced in stainless steel to evoke the best of the Malbec fruitiness. In the process however the wine is suffering from a potential side effect of its winemaking, reduction. So what to do? Decant and aerate the heck out of it. Having done so you'll discover a treasure not so deeply buried. The nose shows ripe fruit and if soft was a smell this would be it. Lively in the mouth; black berries, rhubarb and cassis. The tannins are only structural and meaty so totally unobtrusive. See, I do like it!
