Domaine des Gaudets Morgon Cote Du Py 2017

100% Gamay Noir planted to the schistose granite and the telltale metamorphic slate that sets Côte du Py as the jewel in the Morgon crown. Just south of Villié-Morgon this prized slope is widely held as the best climat in all of Morgon if not all of Beaujolais. Its fragrant force and sapid intensity are in a league of their own. Planted to the decomposing soils they in Beaujolais call roches pourries, or rotted rock, this Beaujolais is cut of a different cloth –a resplendent cloth of color, texture, and glowing beauty. The roches pourries reveals itself from the very nose –in the way of wild cherries, root spices and apricots which in a red of this sort is nothing short of hypnotic.

Full and flavorsome on the palate with sweet and sour acidity, this dry Gamay is but a pup; adorable in the affable youth of cherry cola and high toned floral notes, it stands out for the wily, protean tannins and the dynamic texture that leaves no question in my mind whether or not this will evolve in breadth and depth. Wines of Côte du Py are renowned for their stamina and all that decades can foster over time with woodsy, resinous sandalwood and the gentle scents of a pine forest floor rising over the years into a heady sweet scented wonder. This is sure to be a keeper if only we don’t keep drinking it heroically as we have since it landed. That it marries finesse with force captivates every one of us like when marveling a cantering thoroughbred horse –that is the very picture of grace and strength and it hasn’t yet even begun showing off. Marvelous.
