Girardin Santenay Gravieres 2010

Biodynamic | This marvelous wine comes to us by way of 45 year old Pinot Noir vines planted to the steep clay and limestone marl of Les Gravières -a 1er cru which most agree without argument is the best Premier Cru parcel in the village of Santenay in the south of the Côte de Beaune. Les Gravières is tended by hand from the start to finish, employing natural yeasts and only pressed gently to ensure the purest and most representative Les Gravières Girardin can muster –such is the worthy renown of this privileged parcel whose wines reward such focus. Aged 14 months on its fine lees in 20% new oak and all along the way tended according to the lunar calendar –bottling without fining or filtration on a Biodynamic Fruit Day.

Rich, fulsome and dynamic, this is Burgundy less reminiscent of the Cote de Beaune and more akin to the flex found among the Pinot Noir coming from the Grands Crus of the Cote de Nuits. A living tension of texture, structure, fragrance and flavor with soaring floral notes, scented spice and a solid core of fruit showing just what 2009 was capable with rich textural tannins but ample fruit to pull it off. Welcome to Les Gravières!
