Hiedler Riesling Steinhaus 2009

Yesterday I had the pleasure of drinking and reviewing the Steinhaus 2002 so following up with the 2009 was great fun. The 2002 hadn't as much to recommend it as a vintage but a wine raised at home, so to speak, should always get a try. This 2009 vintage is quite good and I found this bottle really appealing.

The first thing to notice is that this wine is in Stelvin closure rather than cork for the 2002. This only as an observation of the evolving thought and practice about wine bottle closures. The nose of the 2002 was atypical for the varietal though that is mostly the nature of the Steinhaus vineyard. Here the bouquet is more Austrian Riesling but begs greater specificity. As we our tasting experience of Austrian wines grows so does our appreciation for the differences of the regions. This is Kamptal Riesling, prettier even perhaps coquettish where the Rieslings of the Wachau which originally defined Austrian Riesling are more precise and mineral. The nose of the Hiedler is white flowers and ripe pitted white fruits. There is honey comb to the flavour and peach. Like the 2002, the finish is seductively soft. – Wine review by LAC.
