Hofer Zweigelt 2012

A beautiful Zweigelt has an addictive property to it in terms of the fruit and the brightness. It’s like having a perfect pint of raspberries in front of you with the order to only eat one. It can’t be done. Around the office we use the term “drinky” quite a bit and it fits here. Bright raspberry and sassy cherry dance out of the glass. The palate impression is even more joyful, with bouncy acids and an absolutely clean finish. A delight, especially if served with a touch of chill and a selection of bright summery grilled fare.

Hofer 2012 Zweigelt, Weinland | 12.5% | Liter bottle format | Certified organic, Hofer’s wines are the pure product of non-interventionist winegrowing that begins in the löss vineyards of Weinland. An elegant Zweigelt the white pepper is quite gentle and its cherry profile has a lovage sort of herbaceous charm that is extremely appetizing and not unlike those bright Pinot Noirs from the Côte Chalonnaise in southern Burgundy. A perennial favorite among those of us who also like red Burgundy, it may not be at tart blackberry or pepper as most Zweigelt but it is buoyant and balanced with more alto/soprano than tenor/bass. A quaffable but fascinating little red that beckons for bistro fare.
