Ascheri Barbera Fontanelle 2009
Mateo Ascheri is big man who loves life and steak. His family's estate has been producing wines since 1880 but Mateo is not a person to rest on laurels. Under his guidance the winery has been modernized and the vineyards revitalized. He also built a hotel above the winery and across the courtyard from the family osteria. If you are traveling in the area of Bra staying at the hotel is a treat; at least take a meal at the osteria.
A few days ago I tasted a half-dozen Barbera from this vintage so I'm definitely in a Barbera state of mind. The Fontanelle is the stately gentleman of the bunch. Balance is important in all things, especially gymnastics and wine, but rarely is it so impeccable in a wine that it seizes that taster’s attention. It makes you feel good. The nose is a reminiscence of childhood; the sweet spices of ribbon Christmas candy. The flavours are spiced plums. – Wine review by LAC. February, 2011.
