Coltibuono Chianti Classico Estate 6/750 2017

Definitive Chianti Classico from the organic ethos at the renowned Badia a Coltibuono, this is what the de Medici family is up to nowadays in case you ever wonder: making unforgettable Chianti Classico. Labeled 90% Sangiovese 10% Canaiolo, I am told this also has a splash of the scarce Ciliegiolo (named in Italian for the light “cherry” notes it imparts) and Colorino (clearly named for the depth of color it imparts).

2009 proved a “record vintage” for these 10-35 year old vines. The fruit was concentrated and plentiful with a depth of woodsy cherry notes and that savory, earthen black tea leaf nuance found on great Chianti. This sort of depth can handle and benefits by a nice duration in oak –in this case 12 months in wood in this case French and Austrian oak casks taming some of the nervier acidity of Sangiovese and mellowing the edgy fruit in a way that brings it all together in a complete whole.

Few wineries in the world can match the historical provenance of this legendary Tuscan estate. Situated in the southeast corner of Chianti Classico, the property is dripping with history and artifacts, including the original abbey constructed in 1052 AD. It is on this property that the original Benedictine founders happened upon the grand trifecta of the time: perfect land for grapevines to make wine, a natural clean water source (no bacteria), and a natural saltmine (salt being the only way to preserve meat without refrigeration). It is a special place indeed.

The 2009 Chianti Classico, produced from organically farmed grapes, is racy and edgy in its style ... none of this cloying red fruit thing here! Ripe cherry bursts froward instantly on the first sip, with a near-cranberry quality to the fruit. It dances. It also begs for another sip. It's downright gulpable, which is a huge complement to the wine. Bright in style, but with a finish that grips, this medium bodied gem is right at home with good pizza or delicious cheese and meat trays.

Expert Review

"Perennial sangiovese superstar Badia a Coltibuono made a solid 2009 Chianti Classico with a bright red color and perfumed aromas and flavors of redcurrant, minerals and violet. The finish is bright, fresh and long."
- note from Ian d'Agata, Winophilia

88 Points - Wine Spectator, 8/31/13
The dusty cherry and currant aromas give way to licorice and spice nootes on the palate in this muscular red. Finishes on the firm side, but remains balanced overall. -B.S.

Food Pairings

Seriously anything tomatoey sings with Sangiovese, pizza and pasta to be sure. Sausages, chicken, gazpacho. Bread salad.
