Gustave Lorentz Reserve Pinot Gris 2012

Gustave Lorentz 2012 Réserve Pinot Gris, Alsace AOC | 13.5% | Hailing from the special parcels of clay and limestone of the Coteaux de Bergheim, this Réserve Pinot Gris is a marvel that is head and shoulders above its peers and certainly fuller than previous vintages. 2012 was off to a cool start in the Spring and for this fewer flowers set which in turn meant fewer clusters of grapes but with late Summer bringing in an idyllic, steady warmth Things were looking up. This serene weather carried on into Autumn and while the yields may have been lower, they ripened evenly to a concentration not seen in years –even though Alsace is on a pretty healthy streak of warm vintages. Fragrant of orchard fruits ranging the spectrum of apples and pears and supported by a lemon peel lift, this Réserve Pinot Gris is nearly dry but for its plush, poached pear appeal and a faint wisp of almonds in that cherry sort of expression we love to find in marzipan. As they say at the cellars of Gustave Lorentz Pinot Gris is perfect with white meats and particularly poultry, meat dishes that have some sweetness, some hard cheeses but also happily marries rich and spicy dishes that require powerful wines. This is a marvel and so supple one need not pair it with anything –as it is lovely all on its very own.
