Mas de Gourgonnier Rouge 2012

Mas de Gourgonnier 2011 Rouge, Les Baux de Provence AOC | Organic | Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre –a blend all its own and unique to this little pocket of France | The Cartier family and The Wine Company go way back from the salad days of the original Loring and the New French Café through every bistro and fine restaurant at one point or another and now their traditional Les Baux de Provence stands proud as one of the best and appetizing red wines such money can buy. Still bottled in the regional squat bottle (only two remain that hold onto the old flask), this is a house built on centuries of tradition –which means they always have and remain wary of chemical or synthetic fertilizers and are leaders in their organic approach to viticulture –an ethos of a region that almost became the first wholly organic AOC had the INAO not put an end to their best intentions.

From a land defined by the relentless Mistral winds that whip and howl at a constant pitch, it was once paved in olive orchards and remains home to quite a few trees; perhaps this fragrant red should come as no surprise as bearing green olive overtones, a floral garrigue of lavender, a deep harmony of dark fruits of the forest and a woodsy finish –almost piney. Few reds at any price suit the table so well and none hold a person enrapt with ripe fruit and savory complexity that compliments the whole –at times quietly venturing toward the meat pan juice notes of Syrah, the cassis of Cabernet Sauvignon, the plush blush of Grenache, and then the floral Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Cinsault.
