Monteti Caburnio IGT 6/750 2009

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante-Bouschet. Matured for 12 months in 35% new French Oak and stainless steel and then bottle aged a further 12 months to integrate. Leathern and meaty with mellow red and black cherries, bright cassis, sandalwood, a roasted nuance and cedar cigar box a fruity licorice note like hackberries from the trees on the boulevard. There’s a sweet and savory tension on the palate with a nice core of fruit, tangy acids, fine tactile tannins and aromatic finish full of the aromatic hardwoods on the nose with a minty lift on the finish that is less herbal and more of a gentle licorice not unlike the herb lovage if you’re familiar with it –and if not and you’re a meat eater get to know this as it would help you prepare the perfect roast to accompany this rich red.

Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, December 2012

Following the style of the previous vintage, the leading features of Caburnio 2009 are elegance and finesse. A climatically very balanced year, without excessive heat during the last ripening phase, enabled us to create a very fresh version of Caburnio, in which a vibrant acidity conveys tone to the excellent ripeness and smoothness of the fruit. Notes of pepper, flint, black olives, grilled spices and subtle nuances of rose add complexity to a fruit led by currants and blackberries. The persistent finish refreshes the palate, leaving pleasant mineral memories.

Food Pairings

Meat, meat, meat but especially lamb and beef. Game birds, duck, goose, squab. Anything with lots of rosemary.
