Perrin Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Sinards Rouge 2010

As warmer weather is taking hold in so many regions, the ripeness levels of the grapes are getting higher and higher (while alcohol levels creep up naturally as well). This is a particular problem in Chateauneuf, which is an area of historical importance because during the cooler times that saw vineyards consistently underripe, this one spot (partially because of the large rocks that hold the heat into the evening) could dependably ripen the grapes. So today, with heat levels rising, the number of Chateauneuf du Pape wines that are out of balance due to high alcohol levels is consistently increasing.

This is why the Perrin family deserves so much respect. Coming in at a sensible 14.5% alcohol (sensible for CDP, anyhow) this wine shows elegance and balance similar to the tippy top wines of the region. Aromas of kirsch, licorice, and that wonderful garrigue of Provence (lavender, cured meat, thyme, and campfire) all combine to an impressive medium to full bodied show. The mouthfeel is just downright sexy. A teasing librarian with waves of beautiful hair twirling in her fingers while she looks over her glasses and catches an awkward young man at the counter off guard and speechless. Moments like that get seared into a young brain, and I can’t help but think there is a young sommelier somewhere out there that will taste this wine and immediately have a new definition of what a great Southern Rhone wine is all about.
