Perrin Vinsobres Cornuds 2011

Revisited from my first note three months ago because I love this so much: Perrin Vinsobres Cornuds 2011 Rhone Valley, France | 14.5% | From the north of the southern Rhone, these are typically more Syrah driven (in this case 50/50 Syrah/Grenache) because it is the closest to the cooler climate of the northern Rhône. Black fruit and black tea drive this wine with dark, sweet notes like black licorice and brown baking spices. A joy on its own and a natural with duck –most memorably magret de canard -worth making soon! If you have yet to try it you will thank whomever turned you on to this.

Perrin 2011 Les Cornuds Vinsobres, Rhône | 14.5% | As the Perrin family are synonymous with the alluvial slopes of Vinsobres, it comes as no wonder this is a stunning southern Rhône red true to the structured gold standard that earned this AOC status as an appellation worthy of its own calling card. A blend of Grenache kept fresh in stainless steel and Syrah rounded out from six months’ time in barrel, these unite in a fresh black peppered meaty cherry note from the Syrah and a floral garrigue from the Grenache. Ready right from the moment I pulled the cork, this is quenching red wine for the table

One of two cuvees of Vinsobres, the 2011 Vinsobres Les Cornuds is a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah. Keep in mind, the Perrins now own 125 acres in Vinsobres. This wine, grown in a vineyard at 400 meters altitude, is deep, rich, full-bodied, with loads of tannin and rather tart acids, but that gives the wine more precision and freshness. It is a blockbuster wine.
