Perrin Cotes du Rhone Reserve Rouge 2011

In addition to their renowned Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Papes so coveted by collectors, the Perrin family make some incredible Côtes du Rhône such as this their Réserve. It is the nonchalant and devil-may-care younger brother to Chateauneuf du Pape; it’s a red of charming qualities but a youthful spirit. Bright berries and a roll in a bed of violets, with enough tannin and lift to stand up to a meal twice its size but an easy charm that reminds you it is not taking life too seriously –a great red for sipping and supping. 13.5%

The Perrin et Fils 2011 Cotes du Rhone Reserve red is not as impressive as the 2010 or 2009 were, because the vintage is not as strong, but the wine (a blend of 50% Grenache from their estate Grand Prebois, adjacent to Beaucastel, and the rest Syrah and Carignan and Cinsault) displays a deep ruby color, a slightly more narrow structure than usual, and some leanness, but still good berry fruit, crushed rock and licorice. It should drink nicely for several years.
