Perrin Cotes du Rhone Reserve Rouge 2017

Perrin Côtes du Rhône Réserve 2012
As a card carrying Rhônophile, I get excited when anything from the Perrin family enters my glass. For generations they have been on the forefront of defining the Rhône Valley for many, and their touch with Grenache and Syrah is legendary. Add to that their embracing of organic and biodynamic farming methods and you have a winner. This vintage is rock solid for the region as a whole but incredibly good for Perrin in particular. The ripeness of the Grenache comes through in waves of raspberry and herbal essence, with rosemary and thyme dominant. The raspberry is pronounced but not sappy at all, very pure.

The great point about this wine, however, is the mouthfeel. Absolutely textbook in style, with a big burst of ripeness at the front, mellow heat in the mid, and long and juicy at the finish but with acidity to balance it out. Those wanting to get a Rhône education would be served well with this wine.

Enjoy with roasted lamb shanks, drenched in herb butter and cooked over a bed of onions and carrots. Add a sage leaf or two for perfection.
