Peyrie Cahors 2014

Domaine du Peyrié 2011 Malbec, Cahors, Southwest France | 15% | Domaine Peyrie is 33 acres of Malbec planted 25 to 40 years ago along a north-south axis on the 2nd and 3rd alluvial terraces of the Lot –a land comprised of siliceous clay soils on a bedrock of quartz pebbles. In addition to the riparian influences of the River Lot, the vineyard also benefits by the influence of the oceanic Mediterranean climate, the latter dominating their Autumn with the southerly wind which leads to healthy ripening.
The result? A rich red only a balmy climate of Cahors could muster, unlike the low vineyards, this Malbec has the terraces of the River Lot to thank for even better exposure… thick skinned blueberries, red and black currants and black plums offer a great core of fruit to which a fragrant sandalwood and the scent of fresh burly pipe tobacco round out and layer in an almost Portuguese lustiness. A red you want even in the height of Summer no matter how hot it may be outside –who cares?! This is irresistible.
