Pichot Vouvray 2012

Pichot 2012 Vouvray | 12% | From one of Vouvray’s oldest families of vignerons and restaurateurs, Pichot’s Vouvray is nonpareil and still matured in their ancient cellars hewn from the very limestone that built the great châteaux of the Loire Valley. From vines between 35 and 60 years old, 80% of this wine is made in stainless steel tanks and 20% in 400-litre wooden vats just honing that inimitable edge of Chenin Blanc. Apple blossom and fresh lemon zest shows how Chenin Blanc begins when young and chummy but even through all this bracing, crisp fruit comes Chenin’s firm mineral character that balances it all so well. This always begins this bright and beautiful and evolves into honeycomb, lime leaves, and with any luck a wisp of lanolin as one finds in mature Pichot.
