Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2009
The Sangiovese grape should not be simply referred to as "Sangiovese." There are so many clones and so much regional variation, that to lump them all together does the grape a dis-service. The region of Montepulciano specializes in what is known as the Prugnolo Gentile clone, which is a bit darker and grippier than the clones often used in Chianti. Poliziano is a producer that specializes in expressing these characteristics. This wine is black-red in the glass with a dark core at the center. Aromas of sappy black cherry, dried firewood, blackberry jam, and pencil lead. Amazingly complex in the nose. Taste is gripping and powerful without being overwhelming, followed a long a graceful finish. Oh my this is good.
