Quinta da Raza, Raza, Vinho Verde, Portugal

AT-A-GLANCE

o Estate bottled wine from native Vinho Verde grape varieties, “Raza” is the estate’s bright calling card made from Arinto, Azal and Trajadura.

o Crisp, fresh and clear as a bell, this offers a balanced acidity and a fragrant fruit character expressive of grapefruit.

o Gastronomic Vinho Verde, this is light and fruity with a fresh zest just perfect to enjoy on its own or with a variety of lighter fare.

o A conscientious estate dating back to 1769 embracing modern techniques and regional traditions with a holistic view of their environment.

o Grown in the Basto sub-appellation, Raza comes from the slopes in the east protected from the Atlantic rains and subject to greater sunshine

“The 2015 Raza is a 50/35 blend of Arinto and Azal, with 15% Trajadura, unoaked and coming in at 11.5% alcohol. With 7.3 grams per liter of residual sugar, it is not austere, but the acidity is high enough to make it perceptibly dry. Beautifully focused, crisp and transparent, this is certainly one of the best yet for this label, with fine solidity, plenty of power and a fresh, lively feel. Not at all fizzy, it finishes with a wave of nice fruit as it airs out, too. This is the type of wine that should be drunk young for best results. Dive in. It will be glorious this summer.”

“This increasingly interesting producer works in the Basto sub-region of Vinho Verde. They describe that as a region that is a bit sunnier than some and less rainy, which is "an important factor for the development of the vine." The average altitude is 250 meters above sea level, with mostly granitic soil (but some schist and clay). These are all rather nice, helped along by the fine 2015 vintage. They are well priced, too, not to mention fresh and non-fizzy. They are more like traditional table wines.”
