Remirez de Ganuza Rioja 2005

This is remarkablly rich Rioja from low yielding from vines that average 60 years with the youngest more than 30 years old and the oldest 96 years old! Planted to 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, the slopes benefit from ideal exposure and microclimate. Two years in French and American oak casks fully integrate penetrating aromas with a palate glowing with floral fruit, minreal spice, and sophisticated oak; a touchstone for we who adore Rioja and an unforgettable taste of Spain.

However, the 2005 Reserva has considerably more stuffing and should easily outdistance the 2006. It is a glass-coating opaque purple color with an already complex perfume of floral, mineral, spice, and black fruit elements. Dense and packed, this structured but impeccably balanced offering will evolve for 8-10 years and have a 30+ year lifespan.

Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza is one of Rioja’s benchmark estates. It encompasses about 132 acres located in four regions of Alava Rioja planted to approximately 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. The winery itself is located in the village of Samaniego. Upon my arrival at the Bodega in May 2010, I discovered a surprise. In addition to a vertical tasting of all the Reservas, Senor Remirez had prepared a similar vertical of Trasnocho, a wine that has never been exported to the USA. With all due respect, the greatest vintages from Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza in my opinion are 2004 and 2001. Trasnocho is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza’s take on a more contemporary style.
