Ricasoli Brolio Chianti Classico 2011

Ricasoli 2010 Brolio Chianti Classico, Tuscany | 80% Sangiovese (their very own clone: the Brolio Sangiovese clone) 15% Merlot 5% Cabernet Sauvignon | After replanting every vineyard to maximize the quality of each parcel of their varied terroir –the largest contiguous piece in all of Tuscany with many microclimates and Approachable, drinkable, a touch more modern but like a your favorite chair that you love to rock your back into: lovely kirsch and snappy thick skinned red cherries that round out with the lofty scent of woodsy leather.

From the very house that wrote the original recipe for Chianti Classico, this has deep roots stretching back a millennia. Ricasoli is the oldest winery in Italy and still run by the very family that started it –and incidentally were among those who first unified Italy. This is archetypal Chianti Classico: a savory compote of red fruit combines with black tea and leathern, red cherry skins. Scents of pine forests are both fragrant and flavorsome and meld with a caramel finish are living proof of Chianti Classico’s great stamp when in the right hands –hands that keep from fussing.

Expert Review

90 points | $24 | 2,790 cases imported | Red
Exotic aromas and flavors of wild berry, candied strawberry and flowers are the main themes in this red, with spice accents emerging on the finish. This is long, sporting dusty tannins. Best from 2015 through 2024.—B.S.

Food Pairings

Seriously anything tomatoey sings with Sangiovese, pizza and pasta to be sure. Sausages, chicken, gazpacho. Bread salad.
