Tascante Ghiaia Nera 2010

Drawn by a combination of unique climate and volcanic soil, with true biodiversity acting as
a backdrop to the vineyards, the “Tascante Estate” project, now in its third grape harvest, has added a second wine: “Ghiaia Nera” (Black Gravel), our interpretation of “Nerello Mascalese” from the young vineyards of the Estates of Mount Etna. Another important witness for Sicily, a wine growing continent made up of different territories and countless variables, so much so that it still has enormous potential to be expressed. 12 months in large oak vats marries all the dark fruit together with great structure and penetrating intensity. This is a taste of Sicily's northern terraced slopes of the volcano Etna -the contradas Sciaranova and Boccadorzo - Randazzo near Catania - Sicily.

The 2010 Ghiaia Nera is Tasca’s first wine from recently planted vineyards on the Etna. Sweet red cherries, flowers and licorice waft from the glass in this delicate, refined wine. There is plenty of Etna character and personality in the glass, making the 2010 a great introduction to the wines of these high‐altitude, hillside vineyards. This is about as good as it gets for a part of the world where viticulture is very expensive.
