Tedeschi Maternigo Valpolicella 6/750 2011

Tedeschi 2011 Maternigo Valpolicella Superiore, Veneto | A superior Superiore from a steep single vineyard whose precipitous bowl ripens Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella to a great depth and tension. How else is it possible to achieve this remarkable Valpolicella Superiore from only 5 year old vines? Superlative! Sweet and sour mulberries and cherries –like the roundest Ripasso I can think of. Once the vines achieve some age I’ve been told they will make an Amarone and if it can concentrate all we find here the world will be a brighter place. This wine is not to be missed and will be a joy to follow as the vineyards ripen even further.

Expert Review

3 Bicchieri

At the very debut of this new Valpolicella from the Tedeschi brothers, the Maternigo Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2011 was immediately awarded 3 Glasses Gambero Rosso. Consisting of Corvina (40%), Corvinone ( 30%) and Rondinella ( 30%), the wine comes from the grapes of a single vineyard of Tenuta Maternigo purchased by Antonietta, Sabrina and Riccardo Tedeschi in 2006. The vineyard is appropriately named Impervious for its strong slope.

The vineyard covers [seven acres] at an average altitude of [1,000 feet] and has a particular formation of the ground, with alternating layers of pink marl and limestone. Maternigo was immediately revealed an exceptional vineyard also for its microclimate, warm, dry soils and temperature variations between day and night during ripening. This therefore allows the grapes to yield strong aromatic wines particularly rich in perfumes. Maternigo Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2011 will be just that: a wine with an extraordinary bouquet and elegant palate that then reveals all its freshness from a good acidity that ensures sound aging.

Premiered at Vinitaly, Maternigo Valpolicella Superiore DOC had convinced everyone from journalists to tradesmen to unanimous acclaim enjoying it completely; a true Valpolicella, then, and perhaps the leaders of the Gambero Rosso wanted to stress this. In a time when the market demands more and more wines with a strong territorial footprint and an easily identified character Maternigo was the immediate favorite. It is a perfect wine of pride of place -just what Antonietta, Sabrina and Riccardo wanted: a fresh, fragrant Valpolicella, inline with the land and with their quality driven philosophy of production; all focused on the Valpolicella and its typical varieties .

In addition to the great renown of the 3 Bicchieri (3 glasses being the highest rating) they are equally proud of Maternigo being recognized as a "Wine of Excellence" -an award given by the leaders of the Espresso Guide Capitel Monte Olmi Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico 2008 which also premiered at Vinitaly. The Monte Olmi - as everyone calls him - is not new to awards and national and international awards, but the joy is renewed every time. For many wine lovers from Verona Monte Olmi "is" Amarone, so it is with joy that Antonietta , Sabrina and Riccardo greet all those Italian and recognition for their highly coveted wine.
