Tineta Ribera del Duero 2011

The little brother to the renowned Avante, this is immediately appealing with delicious boysenberry fruit from one of the three DOCa in Spain (the other three great appellations being Priorat and Rioja), this is smoky, dense and dark on the nose while the palate is dense, expressive and fragrant –bearing Tempranillo’s rich side –of its country cousin clone the Tinto Fino whose thicker skin and sturdier composure make for a serious red.

From the very important Ribera del Duero DOC (one of only three DOCs –the others being Rioja and Priorat), this is a great glimpse at great value. Still bearing the blush of youth, this plummy, bright berry fruit start with inviting scents on the nose and then carry onto the palate with a bright and buoyant acidity akin to fresh blueberries and tart blackberries. Velvety tannins make for an appetizing structure now but guarantees this will be a fun bottle to enjoy over time.

The grapes from this vineyard are used in the 2011 Tineta (100% Tinto Fino). It reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as copious notes of creme de cassis intermixed with hints of wood smoke and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, juicy, succulent and sensual, it should drink nicely for 3-4 years.

Not far from the beautiful cathedral city of Pedrosa de Duero in the province of Burgos on the northern bank of the Duero River is the Bodegas Avante. Their south-facing vineyards were planted between 1975 and 1985 in alluvial, gravel, sand and clay soils.
