Irreverente Dao White 2017

Irreverente is a delightful white made from the unique Portuguese variety Encruzado blended with a little Malvasia Fina and Bical. The UDACA coöperative behind this wine is one of the best in all of Portugal and synonymous with the Dão Region. In a country steeped in the proud tradition of coöps, many small independent growers band together in to coöps and sometimes likeminded regional coöps band together as they did to form UDACA -to both find strength in numbers and to make enough wine to actually bring to market -as some of these growers just tend a few acres here and there.

Irreverente Branco (white) is a broad expression of the Terras do Dão, the high granitic inland vineyards of Dão south of the Douro region in the heart of Portugal north of Lisbon. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, what would be a Mediterranean climate is tempered by diurnal shift created by the high elevation of this region that surrounds the Serra da Estrela, the highest peak in Portugal. Warm days and cool nights ripen fruit thoroughly while retaining a fresh acidity, a mineral character and long persistence through the finish. On the nose this freshness comes through with notes of lime and tropical fruits which is then aged in French oak with batonnage to calm the whole and bring this wine into harmony. Great with salads and seafood, this also makes a great little aperitif wine all Summer.
