Vietti Roero Arneis 2011

Estate grown from the Santo Stefano parcel in Roero (just north of Barolo) this Arneis is exceptional. Fermented in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation, this medium bodied wine still comes with ample body to balance the bright and crisp orchard fruit that refresh the whole palate and finish with a snappy floral finish. Vietti’s name is synonymous with Arneis, Piedmont’s indigenous dry white, because it was Luca’s father Alfredo, “the father of Arneis” who restored this nearly extinct variety to global fame. Invigorating and inviting, Arneis is a favorite with seafood, mild pork dishes, and my personal favorite: the elemental pleasure of paring this with a simply dressed roasted chicken.
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, February 2013

“Pale sunshine yellow color with fresh floral, citrus and melon aromas with hints of almonds. An unoaked, dry, medium bodied white wine with crisp acidity, the Arneis is well-balanced, elegant wine with good complexity and a lingering finish.”
Tasting note from Vietti

A word on the heritage of Vietti’s Arneis connection:
Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti’s husband) is also called the “father of Arneis” as in 1967 he invested a lot of time to rediscover and understand this nearly-lost variety. Today Arneis is the most famous white wine from Roero area, north of Barolo. Setting such a fine example with Arneis, even fellow vintners as far away those on the west coast of the United States now are cultivating and producing Arneis!
