Vietti Castiglione Barolo 6/750 2009

Vietti 2008 Castiglione Barolo
Some Barolo is leaner and flexing others mellow and warm but the best offer a tension of the two that practically vibrates in the glass and on the tongue. 100% Nebbiolo from top tier vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, Monforte, Barolo and Novello, this Barolo shimmers with charms of every type a fragrance and flavor, texture and memory. The texture is practically nervous from the way the tremulous acids and astringent tannins tug and shift with red fruit, root spices, leathern and woodsy aromas. This is stunningly good and remarkably integrated given its youth –perhaps it was the 24 months in oak followed by 8 months in steel before bottling –everything really comes together and yet is distinctly its own held in a living tension.

Expert Review

92 Points -
“The Barolo Castiglione deftly balances the open, radiant personality of the vintage with considerable underlying structure. Warm, dense and full-bodied, the Barolo Castiglione flows effortlessly across the palate with generous fruit and fabulous overall balance. The wine was even better when I tasted it from bottle a few months later. It is another overachieving wine from Vietti and a bottle that is exceedingly fairly priced”. "The biggest news at Vietti is the recent acquisition of new parcels in Brunate and Lazzarito. Finding high quality plots in Piemonte’s grand crus and then financing their purchase is a massive endeavor and a huge accomplishment. Luca Currado is quite open in his view that 2008 was a challenging year in the vineyards, where the constantly changing weather required a nimble, flexible approach. Currado did quite a bit of bleeding to bring his wines into balance. I also tasted all of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Baroli. Of those vintages, the 2010s are shaping up to be heroic wines. Among the new releases I am less enthusiastic about the 2009 Barbere, wines that are very good, but not as exceptional as they so often are."
