Cono Sur Riesling 2012

Chile? Riesling? Huh? People may be surprised to see a Riesling coming from Chile, but here's the truth: few countries in the world hold as many micro-climates and different terroirs as Chile. At an average of 45 miles wide but 450 miles long, there is something for everyone (and every grape). Add in the influence of a little block of ice near Chile called Antarctica, and you have a surprisingly good spot for a grape like Riesling.

This gem is clocking in north of 13% alcohol, which means there is no residual sugar left. This is a bone dry Riesling with all the goodness of this aroma packed variety: lime zest, minerals, limestone, quince, and a blast of delicious bright nearly-mango zing. A clean finish that whooshes your palate clean with bright acidity. This is a heckuva wine.

Cono Sur is an extremely neat property. Their wines are certified sustainable, using organic (non-certified) farming methods throughout their acreage. They ride bicycles throughout the property (hence, the name of the wine) to avoid using fossil fuels. And they also purchase a large amount of property to allow for a 'buffer zone' for nature. Extremely neat.
