Yalumba Viognier - Eden Valley 2014

Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier 2012: Yalumba has a secret weapon when it comes to the world of Viognier: winemaker Louisa Rose. Called the 'queen of Viognier' around the world, nobody can touch her experience and expertise when it comes to this complicated varietal. (Famously difficult to deal with in both the vineyard and winery, Viognier takes a special personality to craft into outstanding wine.) One of the (many) reasons I like this wine is the Northern Rhone aspects that it brings: a touch of metallic meets mineral edge, a firmness of stone fruits (slightly underripe apricots) and perfect balance. It may seem odd to evoke the Northern Rhone when talking Australia but it's a huge compliment to this wine to compare it to the wines of Condrieu. Stunning length but firmed framed, this would be right at home with a Vietnamese salad, a bowl of Pho, or slow roasted whitefish. For cheeses, leaning toward the double and triple creams would be dreamy.
