Lageder Haberle Pinot Bianco 6/750 2018

The Südtirol may not sound Italian and its dynamic wines may not taste typical of Italy but they certainly are among the nation's best. Up until the close of World War I, this alpen paradise belonged to Austria. Winemaker Alois Lageder is the fourth generation to look after his family estate as his mother gardened: according to Biodynamics -a step beyond organics which treats each as a closed loop system and forbids chemical pesticides and herbicides, tends the vineyards to the sidereal calendar among other methods. The results are phenomenal because terroir speaks more eloquently and the land is healthier for it. What about the wine?

An Olympian above other Pinot Bianco, this is a taste of Biodynamically grown, single vineyard fruit from 20-45 year old vines, whose feet have always known Haberlehof in Buchholz where they have enjoyed 360 some days of sun every year and gently ripen at some 1,700 feet preserving fresh orchard fruit acidity and fragrance and finish of orangecicle in a refreshing way beyond memory and the chummy power of gold filtered nostalgia. For all its immediate appeal, Pinot Bianco can do more than refresh -who thought it could stir the soul? Alois Lageder proves yet again that living wine is altogether different.
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston

From selected vineyard sites located in Pochi and Penone at an altitude of 480 to 520 metres a.s.l. (1,500 - 1,710 feet), exposed to West and South-East, these 18 to 46 year old Pinot Bianco vines take to these stony and sandy soils and between the vein of local limestone, the warm days and cool nights, the Haberle is born.

Brilliant straw-yellow colour with a green shimmer. Very fine, fruity (apples, peaches), uplifted varietal aroma combined with very well integrated oak spice on the nose. Elegant, grapey flavor, medium bodied with a round and fresh mouth-watering finish. When cellared well, this wine may be kept for 3 to 5 years.
