Beaucastel Coudoulet Rouge 2021
Vietti 2011 Tre Vigne Barbera d’Asti, Piedmont, Italy | 14% | Sealed with a Diamant taint proof cork | History shows how Vietti’s great faith in Barbera even plants this exceptional variety to slopes that could be called Barolo if only planted to Nebbiolo. Barbera though deserves its place among the pantheon of Piedmont. Vietti knows this and how to make the best Barbera around. This example from the Piemontese town of Asti is far more baritone than many of the high hat alternatives from Asti whose acidity bear a bright edge sometimes screwing up the eyes. Not in this case. Here we find a meaty, savory, spiced mixed of berried fruit, al dente tannins, and a sweet/sour acidity that lends an engaging tension to the whole. This is marvelous and sets the table nicely. Looking for Barbera at an even riper timbre? Next time try Vietti’s Tre Vigne Barbera from Alba –another marvel all its own despite the familial resemblance.
