Caves de Saumur Rouge Reserve Vignerons 2018

An old world blend of old vines made by the renowned Patrick Campbell and Ray Kaufman who once made the famous wines of Laurel Glen Winery. This though hails from old vines in Mendoza where Ray tends the other wines for Adelante. The production is small, but the quality is excellent. The premise: spontaneous natural fermentation and aging in small barrels with minimal filtration. For example, the Pioneer Red is a wonderful tribute to the pioneers of winemaking. A quality wine with generous fruit and spice. A Malbec based blend like those field blends of old we are told there is a splash of some 2% white grapes but that doesn't take any hue from this wine's dark color and character -it just lends a fragrant nuance to this red's inviting depth. Violets, a hint of earth and spice are balanced with a round, ripened fruit and a fresh finish.

Expert Review

"The wine is engagingly tasty from first pour, showing sweetly ripe red cherry with tangy dark red raspberry, rustic purple boysenberry, vanilla, and a hint of roses / violets. It smooths out and darkens (including more mulberry / blackberry) over about two hours in a decanter. The wine is highly Drinkable."
