Gerberas Garnacha 2019

Tour des Gendres 2012 Le Classique, Bergerac | 13.5% | Luc de Conti has farmed Bergerac his entire life and his vines have been organically tended for 20 years as of writing this in (2014). When you realize that these old vines yield only 5 to 6 bunches per vine it is no wonder that these clusters are concentrated and the wines these yield tell as clear a tale as any could hope to find from Bergerac. 60% Merlot and 20% Malbec make for quite the red blend –fragrant of baked rhubarb and fresh blackberries and kept in a warm tension by an herbal tarragon both fragrant and flavorsome. The texture is far softer and more polished than the aromas or knowledge of the region might suggest –it is balanced and complete with all things in their place yet nonchalant –not merely the charming rustic but a wise one who knows their land and purpose. If this wine were a man or woman one could talk into the night along any topic you rose so long as one didn’t mind plumbing deep rabbit holes to surface far from home –an easy and memorable adventure albeit unfamiliar –perhaps that’s why a seasoned taster is so charmed by it? An affable southwestern red to be sure –breaking the mold of trite comparisons to Cyrano and giving Bergerac a second glance at its soul rather than its surface charms. Luc de Conti, I doff my hat –impressive work!
